The Job Role
Hybrid: In the office 3 days and 2 days working from home per week, after successful probation period.
We are seeking an experienced Business Intelligence Developer to join our Business Information team.
This is a broad, hands-on role covering the full BI lifecycle, from data ingestion and transformation through data modelling and analysis to delivering meaningful insights through Power BI.
Our current data environment has been developed largely in-house, with Python and Microsoft SQL Server forming the core of our data pipelines and Power BI as our established reporting and visualisation platform. This environment supports the business today, but we recognise that our technology and architecture may need to evolve as our data requirements grow. We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked within mature BI or data environments and can bring that experience and perspective to our team.
As part of the role, the successful candidate will bring experience and perspective from mature data environments to help us understand the strengths and limitations of our current architecture and how it should evolve. They will help us strengthen our development and engineering practices and evaluate future capabilities, technologies and approaches, balancing scalability and best practice with maintainability, cost, operational overhead and business value.
This role would suit an experienced BI Developer who enjoys working across the technology stack, solving real business problems and collaborating with others to find pragmatic, maintainable solutions.
What You'll Be Doing
- Data Pipelines & Integration
- Develop, maintain and enhance our existing Python and SQL Server-based data pipelines.
- Design and build reliable data transformations that support reporting and analytical requirements.
- Improve pipeline reliability, performance and maintainability through appropriate error handling, logging, monitoring and validation.
- Review existing solutions and identify pragmatic opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained for key integrations, transformations and processes.
- Data Modelling & SQL Development
- Design, develop and maintain data models that support reporting, analytics and wider business requirements.
- Develop clear, consistent and reusable data structures for use within Power BI.
- Review existing models and transformations and recommend improvements to performance, usability and maintainability.
- Work with the wider team to establish consistent definitions for key business measures and metrics.
- Reporting, Analysis & Insight
- Design, develop and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards that provide clear, accurate and actionable information to stakeholders.
- Work with stakeholders to understand business questions and use data to identify trends, opportunities, risks and areas requiring further investigation.
- Help stakeholders understand what data means, why it matters and what action might be taken as a result.
- Develop effective semantic models, relationships, measures and DAX calculations.
- Apply appropriate reporting and visualisation principles to make information easy to understand and use.
- Help establish consistent development standards and approaches across our Power BI environment.
- Data Quality & Reliability
- Develop appropriate validation and data quality checks throughout the BI lifecycle.
- Investigate data discrepancies and work with relevant teams to identify and resolve underlying issues.
- Promote confidence in the accuracy and consistency of information delivered through BI solutions.
- Requirements & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work directly with stakeholders across the business to understand their objectives, challenges and questions, translating these into appropriate analysis, reporting and data solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Manage work from initial requirement through development, testing and delivery.
- Development Practices & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to technical standards and best practices across the BI and data environment.
- Promote appropriate use of source control, testing, peer review, documentation and structured deployment practices.
- Share knowledge and experience within the team and contribute to collaborative technical decision-making.
- Own budget management across the paid mix, driving improved ROAS and reforecasting where needed.
- Adhere to Health & Safety and Quality Management policies and procedures.
- Support additional tasks as required to help the team succeed.
